Students Present at the NAACP Youth Empowerment Conference

Stacy Ogbeide, Antoni Hanigan, and Gaston Rougeaux-Burnes with help from Kyle Wallace presented A Survivor's Guide to Growing Up as a Minority in "Da Field” at the 8th Annual NAACP Youth Empowerment Conference at Missouri State University in Springfield Missouri. The conference is meant to empower the African American youth in the community by bringing together professionals and organizations in the community as well as arranging positive mentors with the goal to uplift, encourage and guide the youth in attendance. Presenters included entrepreneurs, professional athletes, graduate students, representatives of various professions including education and health care leaders. On behalf of the RJ Murney Clinic at Forest Institute the students presented material focused on building coping skills related to peer pressure, promoting positive self esteem and identity development related to African American and multiracial youth. This is the third year the Murney Clinic has provided the workshop and each year it has been evaluated as one of the most popular workshops of the conference by the young participants.
