About St. Louis

Known as the "Gateway to the West," the greater St. Louis area is truly an urban community and Missouri's most populous metropolitan area, with an estimated 2008 population of 2.87 million. And it is overflowing with recreational, entertainment, cultural and educational amenities.

It is perhaps most famous as the home to the iconic Gateway Arch, a soaring, silver structure built in 1965 to commemorate St. Louis' role in the westward expansion of the United States.

The city has some notoriety in the musical world for contributing to blues, ragtime and jazz. The Municipal Theater, or simply the Muny, is the largest and oldest outdoor musical theater in the U.S. Music lovers also benefit from the Grammy-winning St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

"North America's Best Sports City" plays host to the St. Louis Cardinals, one of nation's most successful professional baseball teams, which competes in Busch Stadium. NFL fans cheer on the St. Louis Rams, while hockey fans have the St. Louis Blues.

The headquarters of many major companies are located in St. Louis: Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Scottrade, Edward Jones, Emerson, Energizer, Anheuser-Busch North America, Purina and Wells-Fargo Advisers.

Residents enjoy meeting neighbors and attending outdoor concerts in St. Louis' 105 parks, including the nation's largest urban park, Forest Park. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is anchored by the Gateway Arch downtown. The Missouri Botanical Garden is one of the world's foremost botanical research gardens.

Forest Park is also home to the St. Louis Art Museum, which displays works by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Picasso.

St. Louis has strong roots in the health care industry, highlighted by two world-class medical schools: Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis University School of Medicine, which are major contributors to medical research.
